Student American Academy of Osteopathy (previously known as UAAO) – SAAO
Mission: The SAAO, formerly UAAO, is the student affiliate organization of the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO). The purpose of the SAAO is to help students acquire a better understanding of osteopathic principles, theories, and practice. The SAAO aids students in attaining a maximum proficiency in osteopathic structural diagnosis and treatment, as well as, fostering a clear concept of clinical applications of osteopathy in health and disease. The SAAO also promotes public awareness of osteopathic medicine so that the community may better take advantage of the benefits provided by the complete health care concept of osteopathic medicine.

Our Chapter: There are many benefits to joining the SAAO. The SAAO offers mock practical OMM examinations for students before their 1st and 2nd OMM examinations. This gives students the opportunity to apply the concepts and skills they learned during OMM lab in an exam setting and show students where they may need more practice before the exam takes place. The SAAO also offers the SAAO Summer Preceptorship Program for SAAO members during the summer between their 1st and 2nd years as medical students. During the program the students participate in OMM workshops that allow them to become more proficient in osteopathic structural diagnosis and treatment as well as introducing students to how OMM can be applied to many different specialties. Additionally, the students involved in the Summer Preceptorship program shadow physicians in the Riland Academic Health Care Center. The shadowing of physicians allows students to gain a clearer understanding of clinical applications of osteopathy in health and disease. Starting this year the SAAO will be offering SAAO Tuesday Sample Yoga sessions throughout the school year. Furthermore, the SAAO also participates in many community service events throughout the year.
Dues: $55 for all 4 years
