The first ACOP meeting of the year took place in Rockefeller Auditorium on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at 12 pm. The E-board members introduced themselves and explained their roles in the organization while also highlighting the different programs ACOP has planned throughout the year. These programs include Adopt-A-Class, Citizen Schools, Winthrop Hospital Swim-A-Thon, Ronald McDonald House Charities, and Reach Out and Read. The first community service event will be Adopt-A-Class, which is scheduled for Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at P.S. 59. Volunteers will speak to the fifth-grade class about nutrition.
Dr. Ron Marino, one of our advisers, spoke to us briefly about his experiences and offered insight about the impact of Reach Out and Read on the community. A book drive for this program was highly successful, and the donations will be handed out in the Central Islip clinic of Dr. Chan, our other club adviser. First-year representative elections were then held, and the unopposed winner was Sara Valentino. Raffles for First Aid, Starbucks gift cards, and 2013-2014 ACOP shirts were drawn before the meeting was adjourned at 12:50 pm.
On a final note, local dues ($20) were collected throughout the meeting. The final collection date will be Wednesday, September 10, 2014 from 12 to 1 pm in front of the William and Mollie Auditoriums.
