During the week of 9/22, CMDA partnered with ACOOG to sell teal ribbons and crochet angry uteruses for supporting Ovarian Cancer research and education. We culminated the event with a walk at Belmont State Park on 9/27.
Though we were a small army with a limited amount of time, we were able to sell nearly 20 uteruses, and a whole slew of ribbons, raising over $190! My favorite part of this experience though was hearing peoples’ stories as they connected with these plush toys. Some shared about their own experiences with ovarian cancer. The whole uterus idea was inspired by Dr. Futterman who saw our advertisement and asked if he could buy the plush uterus on the ad instead of a ribbon… Little did he know that we would take his joking comment seriously! We went and found him in anatomy lab surrounded by first years, and his face was priceless!! I think he was a little confused as to what he’d do with it (he decided it was probably too early to give such a thing to his baby niece), but he seemed surprised in a good way. Dr. Beatty also bought one, and excitedly explained how the uterus is analogous to the prostatic utricle! #unexpectedlearning, #nerdyandiloveit.
Thank you to everyone who supported the cause through the walk, through buying stuff/donating, helping sell, and spreading the word!
