Minutes for OB/GYN meeting on 10.16.13

I. Call to order:

Called to order at approximately 12:08pm. Record of attendance is on the shared Google document. The main focus of this meeting was to discuss pathology of breast, ovarian, and cervical cancers with Dr. Maria Plummer.

E-Board Members present:

  • Elise Kochoumian, Elizabeth Stachtiaris, Cecilia Zhang, Ayushi Singh, Lisa Roloson, Angela Charles

II. New business:

President Ayushi Singh began the meeting by introducing Dr. Plummer. In addition, Ayushi listed upcoming and current events in support of breast cancer awareness, including, bake sales, breast cancer walk at Jones Beach, and a T-shirt sale. Dr. Plummer spoke about the genetics, histological characteristics, clinical presentations, and grading system of tumors that can affect the breasts. She also taught about ovarian cancer, including characteristics, staging, and histological and pathological findings. Dr. Plummer discussed the different tumors that can affect the uterus; she included information about the staging, pathology, histology, and characteristics of these cancerous tumors. Finally, she talked about cervical cancer, the histological and physical/pathological characteristics of different tumors that can affect the cervix, as well as the importance of receiving an HPV vaccine. At the end of the presentation, Dr. Plummer answered questions from students regarding the various aspects of her presentation, including differentiation between various tumors and symptoms of ovarian cancers.

At the beginning of the meeting, Elizath Stachtiaris collected money for T- shirt sales.

President Ayushi Singh concluded the meeting.

III. Announcements:

In support of breast cancer awareness, Ayushi announced all the upcoming events during the month of October, including the annual breast cancer walk, school T-shirt sale that donates all proceeds to breast cancer research, and various bake sales.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 1:00 pm.
