On September 26th, 2013 the Global Health Organization held a basketball fundraiser to benefit the Hope Foundation. The “Around the World Fundraiser” tournament consisted of 15 teams of student-athletes playing head-to-head in exciting 3 on 3 half-court games. Teams were named after countries with Team China winning a prize for the best team uniform! The winner, El Salvador, was given a prize as well as a chance to play, that childhood basketball game we all know and love, Around the World against an All-Star Faculty Team. Some of the faculty that made it out to shoot hoops included Dr. Beatty, Dr. Geisler, and Dr. Chan, with a guest appearance by Dr. Chan’s prodigy daughter! Another all-star faculty player, Dr. Conrad, was on the injured reserve list and unfortunately couldn’t make it out.
The games started after a beautiful performance of the National Anthem by NYIT-COM’s newest club, the Note-O-Chords. There were as many as 6 half-court games being play simultaneously while spectators cheered on their favorite country. The tournament event also included a bake sale of some special fall themed treats!
The school’s first basketball tournament fundraiser was a huge success and raised over six-hundred dollars for the HOPE Foundation, which provides healthcare to the women and children of Bangladesh.
A huge thank you goes out to all who donated and came out to be a part of the event.
