The NYCOM Sports Medicine Club with the NYCOM PM&R Club held a lunch time meeting with
Dr. Yao entitled “The 15 Minute OMM Exam”. The students in both clubs grabbed lunch from
the Serota lobby and moseyed up to the OMM lab to see Dr. Yao’s presentation. Due to the
previous day’s snowstorm, NYCOM lost power, though despite the lack of lighting, the meeting
was still able to be held.

Dr. Yao began the meeting with a Q & A session about using OMM in internships and
residencies as well as the paths one may take to specialize in OMM and neuromuscular
medicine. Next, he took a student from the group presenting with back pain and demonstrated
how a patient may be screened, treated, and reassessed in less than 15 minutes. He began
by doing a series of special screening tests to make his diagnosis followed by a myriad of
treatments. A few cracks here and another crack there, in combination with muscle energy and
soft tissue techniques, he reassessed the patient and showed a vast improvement in motion
from the initial screening. He then took more questions from students on how to treat certain
ailments. After the meeting was over, he allowed the lab to stay open for a short time for
supervised OMM practice.

NYCOM AOASM and AOCPMR would like to thank Dr. Sheldon Yao for his excellent
presentation.
