President Szuheui (Suzy) Wilson introduced the speaker to the
audience, Dr. Angela Buonvino, who is a fellow alumnus of NYCOM, part
of the teaching faculty and also advisor to our very own club, SOIMA.
She came to give a talk about the lifestyle and training needed to
become a hospitalist, in which she currently holds a position as an
attending at Winthrop Hospital.
She expressed that she was initially interested in internal medicine
because of the wide variety of subspecialties it offers, as compared
to other specialties. Some of the problems internists face with our
current health care system, include Medicare reimbursement for
training programs. She believes that with more universal health
coverage, these problems could be alleviated. She also compared a
hospitalist track versus an out-patient internist and expresses that
hospitalists are more integrated and specialized than their
out-patient counterpart. As a hospitalist, malpractice insurance is
usually paid for by the hospital and owning a practice is less common.
She then describes a typical day for her at the hospital that includes
seeing patients, managing and teaching residents and medical students.
She expresses that another one of the problems she faces is that the
practice of medicine is now often guideline driven and does not
necessarily put the patient’s needs in mind, especially those that
may present with complications. She describes that salary for a
hospitalist may range from $175,000 – $225,000, working 3 days a
Lastly, we conducted a Q&A portion in which the audience can ask any
questions to Dr. Buonvino. We finally concluded our meeting at
