Meeting #1
October 3, 2012
Start time: 12PM
End time: 12:45PM
All members of the eboard were present

In today’s general interest meeting, Julie Ramaley as AMSA
president, presented AMSA’s goals for the year. The goals include
trying to transform idealism into meaningful public service,
innovation and institutional change, give power to medical students to
take action and create change about issues that we, as medical
students, care about. We also outlined some of the past issues that
AMSA has worked on or are presently working on. This includes having
played a major role in advocating for limiting work hours during
residency, as well as trying to stop increases to loan rates for
medical students.
National organization goals were also presented, which include trying
to provide quality, affordable health care for all, promote global
health equity, enriching medicine through diversity, professional
integrity, development and student well-being. Some of the initiatives
that the NYCOM local chapter of AMSA will be promoting this year is
PHARM FREE week, which is trying to remove the big influence
pharmaceutical companies have on what prescriptions doctors prescribe.
We are also trying to represent NYCOM in AMSA legislative committees,
as well as participate in AMSA events and conferences. Other issues
AMSA wishes to bring to the forefront is promoting primary care,
health equity week and policy reform in AIDS advocacy.
We also outlined how we plan to meet the national initiatives for the
next couple of meetings. They are as follows:

11/29 – world AIDS day – guest speaker speaking about living with
AIDS (cosponsoring with SOIMA/ LGBT
1/18 – health equity week of action – guest speaker Dr. Leanna Wen
as a part of her book tour, will speak about health policy and her
experiences in global health
2/6 – pharm free week – guest speaker and see how NYCOM ranks
4/3 – ‘How to survive a plague’ – documentary screening

Other events AMSA will also be holding include a fundraiser for the
annual St. Baldricks event, and an IV/injectable workshop with Dr.
Plummer (cosponsored with SOSA). We also informed the student body how
first and second year medical students can receive free Rohen’s
anatomy flashcards and Rubin’s pathology flash cards, respectively,
just by joining the national organization online. Lastly, we elected
our first year representative.
