On our 3rd general body meeting of the year, held last Thursday, December 1st, AOCPMR welcomed Dr. Luke Garcia, D.O., a former NYCOM scholar and current PGY-4 in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Nassau University Medical Center as our guest speaker. He articulately explained the roles of a PM&R physician and how our training as osteopathic physicians gives us an advantage over our allopathic counterparts. He spoke about the goals of treatment to improve the quality of life while treating the person as a whole, working as part of a multidisciplinary medical team with many other physicians, specialists and health professionals. He concluded his talk with advice on how to obtain a PM&R residency by excelling at academics at NYCOM, rotating at hospitals with desirable residency programs, and emphasizing the importance of finding a program that fits your personality. Dr. Garcia was a very informational speaker and enthusiastically stayed long after the meeting to answer questions.
