The Student Osteopathic Medical Association, NYCOM chapter held its first meeting on August 31st 2011.
Dr. Broder introduced himself and spoke briefly on the benefits of SOMA membership. The E-board members also introduced themselves and each spoke about one of the following topics: what SOMA is as an organization, why it is advantageous to join SOMA, resources SOMA has to offer, the benefits and scholarships available to SOMA members, and leadership, education, research, political action, professional development and mentoring opportunities SOMA provides. Upcoming events for the year were also included in this discussion.
Additionally the available leadership/chair positions (1st year representative, 2nd year representative, International Health Committee Chair, Minorities affairs Committee Chair, Political affairs Committee Chair, Preventative Medicine Committee Chair, Fundraising Committee Chair) were discussed and those interested were instructed to submit letters of intent by September 19th. Elections will take place at SOMA’s second meeting on September 27th.
Lastly, Netter’s Atlas’s were handed out to those students who brought receipts of payment.
