The second Rules Committee meeting held on December 13th was a success with all its members present via teleconference. We had the opportunity to touch base on many on going and important issues, and continued to fine tune resolutions for them throughout our discussion.
One of the most integral aspects of a SGA is having a good voting system to voice our opinions. Electronic voting system is one of the more efficient ways that would accomplish this. Currently a sub-committee is in place for issues regarding electronic voting with clickers, and is working hard to make it come into fruition during the upcoming SGA meeting. They’re currently fine-tuning the process with a simulated SGA meeting to catch any glitches that need to be worked on ahead of time. Every attempt is being made to ensure that it runs smoothly during its actual use in the next meeting.
We have a lot of great people leading our SGA, however, their positions are marked by limited time period. Proper transitioning from one year to the next is necessary to maintain the viability of the SGA and to make any significant progress in the long haul. The rules committee is currently involved in establishing a set of written rules outlining responsibilities for former members in transitioning documents to new members assuming their roles. We hope that the proper handling of important documents during this time will create a smoother transition when they step up to assume new positions, and encourage the continuation of the good work of all its former members.
Another issue that is being worked on is making off campus NYCOM events more welcoming and stress free by altering the current system for verifying student identity at the entrance. We are trying to implement a system that prevents 3rd and 4th year students from being turned away at the door due to forgetting their NYCOM ID that is required to gain entrance to off campus events. Few different suggestions have been voiced during the meeting, such as entering NYCOM e-mail address when 3rd and 4th year students purchase tickets via paypal, and using this information to verify identity. Details to accommodate everyone are still being debated with different ideas to create the best possible solution.
We’re also currently working on an absence policy for SGA members and various club members. At present we do not have established rules to enforce the mandatory attendance requirement to applicable students. We’re addressing what counts as an excused versus unexcused absence, and how to apply any requirements to students away on rotation.
A suggestion that was brought up during the last meeting was to integrate a pledge into the SGA meetings. Many of the rules committee members felt that this could play a positive role in the future meetings by demonstrating a sense of unity and pride among the students. We are continuing to discuss how and when this would come into play during the meetings.
We hope this has been helpful in providing a glimpse of what goes on in the rules committee. We are always open to addressing any new issues or concerns, so please feel free to contact us.
